The people and readers who know me also understand I am a massive racing fan. This September is important to me not just because of Halo Reach - Formula 1 2010 will release in the same month. The latest developer diary shows the devs talk about weather affecting races, handling and strategy. To accompany the latest video, codies has posted a Question and Answer session in their forums.
Full Q&A below:
Full Q&A below:
Just checked my inbox and T4RG4 was kind enough to send these over, many thanks mate!
Could it be possible that it rains lightly for a few laps, everyone scrambles in for wets, then the rain stops and we have to scramble back in for dry tyres?
Yes, that is entirely possible and it’s therefore wise to carefully consider a change in strategy if you feel there is a chance the onset of rain is just a brief shower. Your Race Engineer will comment on other drivers pitting for certain tyres and this can give you a clue as to the performance gain should you follow their approach…
What different levels of rain are available for us to set in races, offline and online? How will the AI be affected by the weather? Will different AI personalities struggle in the wet but be more competitve in the dry i.e. Massa?
Weather types at the moment are as follows: Dynamic, Clear, Light Cloud, Overcast, Light Rain and Heavy Rain.
Will there be different temperatures in dry conditions as opposed to just "dry"? How will they affect tyre wear and engine performance?
Each track has a different weather system, so Bahrain is guaranteed to be dry and very hot and Spa the unpredictable challenge it’s renowned to be. The ‘Sunny’ temperature variations track to track are only going to be noticeable to a few people but we’ll balance that nearer release.
What game modes will use the weather system?
All of them can utilise weather, but Time Trial is a user selectable Dry or Wet setup.
Can we drive in the wet in the time trial mode?
Yes
Is there a possibility of more than one downpour in a race? So you're constantly dashing in the pits/gambling to stay on slicks?
Yes, that’s the idea behind dynamic weather.
For instance there is light rain and it has just stopped, will the intermediate (not wet) tyre wear out as the track dries out, can they get to the point were it could work as a slick tyre and set respectable lap times? or will they overheat and be useless?
Inters handle slight deviations from standard weather types very well but they too will eventually overheat in the dry and become useless.
Is the ratio of dry to wet grip different for the curbs/painted areas than it is for tarmac?
We have control over white lines and kerb grip levels in relation to tarmac, in fact we set a multitude of surface properties but the weather ratio is static. Having said that, you do not want to run the kerbs in heavy rain as it offers slightly less grip than the tarmac and that makes all the difference…
Will you be able to make your own weather scenarios over a race weekend?
Not over a Race Weekend, but across a Championship of your own creation in GP Mode and Custom Online.
Will it ever become so wet that we get a red flag in the race or to the point where keeping control of the car is near imposible?
There are no Red Flags in the game at present. Keeping control of the game is exceptionally difficult when the track is soaked and you’re running on slicks!
Some AI will make brave tyre descisions during a race, will it be these same AI that do it every time and a pattern will begin to emerge?
There will be no particular pattern
If a new team tries something rash with the tyres and starts doing personal best sectors/purple sectors will all the cars respond to this by changing ASAP, also causing cars to queue?
No, the AI cars do not look at the times other AI drivers are attaining but the implementation method means they are all likely to start following this strategy anyway it’s just some will do it sooner than others depending on where they are in the race.
In F1 generally drivers seem to find more grip OFF the racing line, will this be apparent in game and if so will AI drivers take different lines.
AI drivers have slight variation in the lines they take anyway, but we’re not including the ability to gain additional grip off-line as that’s far too subtle for the vast majority of players to pick up on. At present you’ll lose grip going offline, especially as a session wears on because marbles form off-line.
Teams sometimes set their cars up in a dry qually for a wet race expecting it to be a Wet the following day. Will AI do this. Some cars also generally have a good set-up in the wet anyway, looking at the Toro Rosso a couple of years ago it suddenly found itself in a position to fight with LH in the Mclaren when in the dry it was seconds off the pace, and in Monza they actually won the race. Is this reflected as well or will speed generally be a constant with changing condition.
The AI modify their driving techniques based on current weather so they don’t ‘gamble’ on weather specific setups across the race weekend.
Multiple times we've seen mixed up grids in the race when large teams have left it too late, will we see AI and teams make the wrong descisions?
This will occur naturally when the AI are looking for ideal slots in which to set their lap times e.g. blocked in traffic.
Is there any wind or any plans to include wind conditions in future games?
We’ve talked about it in the past and we could include this but I personally think that is taking it too far – it’s too subtle at the moment. I want players to be able to drive consistently and I don’t think it’s in anyone’s interests to damage our approach to attaining that goal through something the player cannot see whilst on-track.
I do have a question. If I am doing 20-30% races will the weather change to respect the race distance. For example on a 20% race will the track dry 5 times quicker?
Weather and pit-stops are likely to be balanced according to race distance but we’re still looking at the final approach to this. I think it might be a bit silly if, for example, we played out an entire weather system across a single-lap race. Pit-stops are currently required in 20% distances.

Years of development, the wifes of Rockstar San Diego and 100 Million Dollars later the day has finally come, Red Dead Redemption has arrived on store shelves world wide. Despite the countless rumors, several delays and other obstacles facing the famed developer which also elevated franchises such as Grand Theft Auto to blockbuster levels has finally delivered the sequel to Red Dead Revolver. While the game carries the Red Dead name it is nothing like its predecessor. Red Dead Revolver was more of a linear experience watered down to arcade shooter type scenarios. Redemption is different, it truly is an open world to explore and lose yourself in. Players will take command of John Marston, an ex-outlaw left to die by his former gang who is now trying to take revenge.
The first 2 or 3 hours of the game made it very clear, this is a polished game with Class-A voice acting and game mechanics in a beautifully landscaped western environment surrounded by NPCs that actually make the players feel as though they are part of a live world including active and often vicious wild life. Having gone through the first few hours I can comfortably say that this is a lot like GTA IV in a Western setting, which is a good thing. The controls are close to GTA IV and make players feel right at home while introducing the weapons wheel which works very well.
I won't go through all the details here in this first impressions piece but let me answer a few burning questions I had before getting hands on with RDR. John controls a little heavier compared to the floaty Nico from Liberty City and the horses feel solid as well, be careful though as you can get knocked of your steed when pushing it too hard. The gunplay is also reminiscent to GTA IV with lock-on or free aim, both feel and work great and combined with the signature 'Dead Eye Vision' aka bullet time become a deadly combination and fun as hell. There are, of course the usually story missions which introduce characters and game mechanics as well as the trading system in the game. Players can also purchase properties which become safe houses, play 5 finger fillet or poker all night long. Those are only a few things you will be able to do in RDR, I had a lot of fun bounty hunting and killing of gangs trying to cause trouble in town followed by looting of the dead bodies.
Red Dead Redemption has been excellent so far and we will post an onPoint later giving you the ultimate recommendation but as of now it has been an addicting, fun and fulfilling first few hours.

Remember Sam Fisher from Third Echelon? Yup, that guy. He is back and gone rogue as he has been betrayed and dropped by the agency with only a few friends remaining while he hunts down the killer of his daughter. Conviction is the revenge story of a stealth expert who turns into a desperate predator looking to kill everyone in his way between him and his target. The game will take players to multiple locations and includes an interesting flashback mission and a showdown in the White House.
Conviction has changed up and modernized the control scheme, almost turning it into a third person action game. Ubisoft Montreal has added several new features including a text and video overlay guiding the player and telling the story, this makes for a more cohesive experience and reducing cut scenes and load times to a minimum. The most prominent feature of Conviction is the called 'Mark and Execute' - players are able to perform a hand to hand kill and unlock the ability to mark several enemies with an arrow and execute them with a push of the Y button. One can argue this is an 'Easy Button' but if used properly it turns the latest entry in the Splinter Cell series into the Jason Bourne game we never played. I should mention, it's fun!
Conviction also has several multiplayer modes ranging from a separate CO-OP campaign to Versus multiplayer modes and challenge rooms. While Conviction is a refreshing reboot of a relatively outdated game genre I can not recommend a purchase due to the Single Player campaign which never quite reaches a proper climax and just falls short of a must buy. However, if you enjoy stealth games and multiplayer with a buddy over Xbox LIVE you should give this a go as there is nothing quite like it to date.
Rent It - Splinter Cell Conviction is a good game that can't quite live up to the hype but is a fun play through.

Amazon has been kicking butt lately handing out video game deals and today's is definitely a good one! Amazon has Lost Planet 2 right now for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 for only $48. What are you waiting on? Hurry up and get over there before they push the price back up!
If anyone would have told me that one of the biggest gaming months would be May, I would have probably given them a shake of the index finger alas Terminator 2 accompanied with a chuckle. It turns out that I would be proven wrong. In fact, May might be the biggest month of the year, or better yet: Ever!
By now you might think I am crazy but read on if you'd like to be proven wrong. The month starts a bit slow with Dementium II and the forgettable Iron Man 2 but from there on out your wallet will start screaming for mercy.
The Zelda inspired PS3 exclusive 3D Dot Game Heroes is a nice bargain if you like old school RPGs from the 8 bit era which is followed by the ever evolving Skate 3 and God of War 3 scale rivaling multiplayer driven Lost Planet 2. Oh you want more? I will give you more. May 18th alone has the blockbuster bracket starring Alan Wake, Red Dead Redemption, Split/Second and the new Prince of Persia reboot.
Ok, take a breath. We're not done yet. Maybe get a coffee or take a nap to recover from that blow to your credit card. Maybe get a part time job because we have a couple more games you might care about. If you have any money left or would like to take out a second mortgage on your house you can get yourself another great racer called Blur, make your own tracks in Modnation Racers or get punched in the face by UFC Undisputed 2010.
That is a lot of quality games to be released in a single month but I have one more to let you guys know about. Remember that Mario game everyone liked so much? Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii? Yup - that game is getting a sequel and word on the street says it will be amazing. If you want more Mario then grab Super Mario Galaxy 2 later this month.
Hopefully you're not too upset at me for pointing out all those games but if you are planning on buying any of those games then head over to Amazon.com who has some serious deals on most of them which includes less than MSRP and several 10 or 20 USD gifcards with your pre-order.
Have a great weekend thinking about which game you want because it will be a tough choice and by now you owe me an apology because - I am gonna let you finish but - May 2010 is the greatest gaming month of all time...OF ALL TIME!
We will try and get some onPoint reviews done for these games but as you can imagine, we won't have time to play them all.
Andreas signing off.

Another day another onVids post! I hope you're ready for some Cliffy B, John Marston and Formula One Racing.
I have compiled some of the exciting videos I have found around the web. Bulletstorm shows off its teath in the first gameplay trailer and looks fantastic. It is described as the Burnout of shooters by Cliff from Epic Games in the interview below. John Marston is getting ready to ride into your living room with the launch trailer for Rockstar's Western entry and the latest Formula 1 2010 dev diary talks about weather condition's effects on the race track and it's awesome!

Assassins Creed was a great tech demo, Assassins Creed 2 was a great game. What can we expect from Assassins Creed: Brotherhood? Not too much is known about the upcoming Ubisoft followup in their latest franchise.
We know "Brotherhood" will be a multiplayer game featuring Ezio, taking players to Rome where they continue the everlasting fight against the Templars. The box art also suggests customizable 'killing styles'. Ubisoft has confirmed the title after a place holder box art was leaked earlier and also released a couple of teaser trailers and web domain registration.
Check out the trailers below detailing some of the new and pre-existing weapons from the series including the axe, dagger, claw, fan, syringe and the ever classy switchblade.
The game is slated for Fall 2010 on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC (With DRM, lots of it!)

Remember the time when Sony announced the future of digital distribution for 250 Earth Bucks? I sure do. Well in case you're one of the few who haven't purchased the pricey gadget and hand held goodness you are in luck!

Some brand new screenshots of Id Software upcoming shooter RAGE have been released. Check them out after the jump!

It has been announced today that Ubisoft has been working on the next version of H.A.W.X. which is scheduled to release later this fall. In H.A.W.X. 2 you will once again be an elite aerial soldier flying in the most advance aircraft.
Bogdan Bridinel, creative director at Ubisoft had this to say: “With over one million units sold worldwide, Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. has become a very successful brand for Ubisoft. This new H.A.W.X. game is directly inspired by Tom Clancy’s books, and it will enable fans to once again experience the excitement and intensity that established H.A.W.X. as a successful brand”
