The 5 Movies based on Video Games we want to see

Posted by: 12/12/2013

In recent years video games have made massive jumps in cinematic presentation as well as story telling apart from the massive advances in game design and mechanics. Comparing games from today to ten or even five years ago would show a jarring discrepancy between quality in just about every way.

Video games have already made their way into theaters before with movies like Hitman, Price of Persia and most recently announced the Need for Speed movie which will come sometime in 2014. There are good reasons for this apart from script writers running out of ideas – video game makers have got some serious chops!

Some of the video games we want to see come to the big screen are already major hits in their medium but, in our humble opinion, have what it takes to become full cinematic masterpieces with the right director and screen writers at the helm.

#5 – Uncharted –  The Uncharted series from developer Naughty Dog has won many Game of the Year awards with its second and third entries into the series because it has a lovable cast of characters, fun and immersive gameplay and maybe most importantly – they were some of the best looking games on the PlayStation 3 in the latest console  generation.

#4 – Mass EffectAnother trilogy made our Top 5 list and this one is BioWare’s Mass Effect which takes place in the galaxy which surrounds earth. There is a massive threat looming over all of the species in the galaxy that can only be defeated by Commander Shepard and his crew. Mass Effect 2 specifically would be fantasic for a move as Shepard goes on a trip to assemble his team before clashing with the Reapers for the survival of mankind.

# 3 – The Last of Us – Inspired by zombie movies, post-apocalyptic books like The Road and bugs being taken over by fungus – that is The Last of Us. Joel, a rough and tumble middle aged father who lost his family, and Ellie, a young and inexperienced but equally smart teenager, make their way from Boston across the United States while avoiding death from human and post-human enemies alike. This is a game that just has to be made into a film as it is the perfect setup all around.

#2 – FalloutHere we have another post-apocalyptic series on our hands. The Fallout games take place in a world where a nuclear winter destroyed the United States and vaults around the country allowed humans to survive under ground. As it was time to emerge they found death, decay, ghouls and mutated creatures out to kill them. It is a tale of survival and staying human. So far the closest we got was the Fallout fan film called Nuka-Break.

# 1 – BioShockThis franchise may be the hardest series out of our Top 5 to realize as a film. While the original BioShock and its sequel took place in an underwater Utopian city called Rapture, the latest entry into the series was set in a floating city in the sky in the early 1900s called Columbia. The BioShock games have been often rumored to be underway but series creator, and studio head at  Irrational Games Ken Levine, has decided that only with the right budget and creative freedom will we see a movie set in the BioShock universe.
