Could the PS Plus offering be ‘Too Good’?

Sure, the headline in this post may look a little ridiculous but it is worth asking.

Sometimes it seems like Sony is losing out on some cash when the weekly, top class PlayStation Plus offerings are announced. Part of me knows that the free or heavily discounted games are unlikely to net Sony a lot of revenue in the big scheme of things but knowing that even AAA games like Borderlands 2 will be ‘Free with Plus’ at some point could deter some from purchasing.

This month along we got Grid 2 which only released in May this year and the already mentioned Borderlands 2. Should I wait to purchase Assassin’s Creed IV, since it will likely hit PlayStation Plus? The answer is maybe. If you are willing to wait to play some of the newer games then a Plus membership is what you need.

Other great games that are fan favorites like Resogun or Hotline Miami are also free on the service which is great for consumers, but just how much does that open Sony up for missed revenue – did I mentioned XCOM Enemy Unknown and Gravity Rush is fee for the Vita as well? Of course some games are only available for a limited time but even still, all we have to do is clock purchase to secure the game to be part of our library.

I suspect that PlayStation Plus is incredibly profitable for Sony as a service since millions of gamers  plop down 50 bucks a year and are more likely to buy other games on the digital platform, especially with the PS4 and the PS Vita but it certainly seems unbelievably cheap to pay 4 bucks a month to get a library as solid as the one provided with Sony’s premium service.

Oh btw, did I mention Microsoft’s ‘Games with Gold’ service nets you epic new games like the original Gears or War?
