Official: Valve announces over 12 Steam Machines

Posted by: 1/6/2014

Today the previously revealed Steam Machines from Valve have become a lot more real. Late last year the software, and now hardware, maker had sent out some beta machines to testers and developers in order to get some hard data on the new tech. Today during CES Valve announced that the Steam Machines are real and coming to consumers sometime in 2014.

Over a dozen manufactures such as Alienware will be producing Steam Machines are various spec and pricing levels. The entry Steam Machines will cost $499 and range into the thousands for enthusiasts. Of course we still have tons more details to come but the fact the the various machines are now in production means we should see the first generation of Steam Machines on the market soon.

“The first generation Steam Machines offers something for every gamer, which is a critical part of extending Steam into the living room,” said Gabe Newell of Valve. “With over 3,000 games and more than 65 million gamers on Steam, it’s important to offer gamers a variety of Steam Machines that allow them to select what makes the most sense for them.”

Here are the specs and manufacturers we have been able to gather so far. From looking at the prices and specs it certainly doesn’t seem that Valve is going after the console market and more after the enthusiast gamers. I would assume that machines from CyberPowerPC and iBuyPower will be the closest to PS4 and Xbox One competitors. Of course it is way too early to make any judgement.
