Review: Thrustmaster Y-250CPX Multi-Platform Headset

Posted by: 1/26/2014

We have written several reviews for Thrustmaster products in the past such as the GPX Game Pad, the Ferrari Vibration GT Cockpit 458 and the Y-250X Headset for Xbox 360, all of which are excellent gaming accessories in their own right and the Y-250CPX is not an exception. The look and feel of the Y-250CPX is nearly identical to the great Y-250X which we tested last year and that is a good thing. The headset is rather lightweight and yet durable, while providing comfort during gaming sessions.

One of the main factors the Y-250CPX should be on your radar is not just its great quality in the mid range gaming headsets but also the fantastic versatility as it is compatible with 6 different platforms. You read correctly, this may be the must have accessory for the multi-platform gamer. Whether you own a PC or a Mac, a PS3, PS4 or a PS Vita – this headset will work with all of these systems and even the Xbox 360 which is quite unheard of – all for $90 MSRP. The Y-250CPX can be plugged into any of these platforms and also comes with the corresponding cables to do it with along with the specific Quick Start Guides which are easy to follow.

Just as the Y-250X these headphones are also wired to avoid any static or cut outs during gameplay or movie watching which continues to be a big plus in the Y-250CPX’s court. The headset also allows for adjusting in-game audio and chat independently which not every headset we have seen pulls off that well and seamlessly. I did have a hard time to get this working properly on the PC but after some tinkering, I was ready to go.

Other great audio features of this Thrustmaster accessory allow for base adjustments, mic and chat on-off switches as well as an adjustable mic gain. All of these adjustments can be made on the handy dial as opposed to the headset itself which I prefer over some of the competitors where many controls are inconveniently placed at the cups themselves. The dial comes with a clip to place it on your shirt to avoid the cable from tugging on your head.

As you may have gathered from my complimenting comments, when it comes to comfort and usability the Thrustmaster Y-250CPX does pretty well. The headset is not trying to be shiny or ‘gamer’-esque which is appreciated as it comes in a flush black and gray color scheme that keeps it low profile. The headphones also come equipped with an extended and adjustable mic along with the adjustable medal head band and over ear amplifier cups that cancel just about all of any unwanted noise for both the user and others in the room. The headset is a little bit heavier than I would liked, just like the Y-250X, and even with the soft leather cushion can cause some pressure on the top of the head after several hours of playing games with it. This may not be an issue for everyone but something to consider.

In the end though the Thrustmaster Y-250CPX is a fantastic headset at the affordable price of 90 Dollars, which – in my mind – is hard to beat when it comes to comparing features, quality and usability. The Y-250CPX allows for the chat and in-game audio adjustments on the fly as well as good audio quality. I spent time playing games like Gran Turismo 6 on PS3, DiRT 3 on PC, Battlefield 4 on PS4 using the Y-250CPX and the headset always provided close to optimal conditions for me apart from some discomfort after extended play sessions as noted before, but this will be the case with just about any headsets in this price range. Overall, I have to say that if you are looking for an affordable audio solution that can be used across multiple platforms and doesn’t compromise features, then the  Thrustmaster Y-250CPX will do a more than satisfying job.
