2K will change online services with GameSpy shutting down

GameSpy Technology was used by a lot of video game companies to provide online multiplayer for their titles. With GameSpy shutting down, game companies need to decide whether to migrate their online aspect of games to a new technology, or end online support for select games.

2K has announced that Borderlands for PC, Civilization IIICivilization IV, and the relevent expansion packs for those Civilization games will be migrating to Steamworks to continue to offer online multiplayer support.

This transition begins on May 31st, and service will be interrupted for these games until they are migrated over to Steamworks.

2K has also announced a number of games using GameSpy technology that will no longer support online multiplayer. The list includes:

  • Close Combat First to Fight (PC / Mac)
  • Jetfighter (PC)
  • Jetfighter V: Homeland Protector (PC)
  • Leadfoot (PC)
  • Rune (PC)
  • Stronghold 2 (PC)
  • Stronghold Legends (PC)
  • Top Spin (PS2 / PC)
  • Top Spin 2 (PC / DS)
  • Vietcong (PC)
  • Vietcong Demo (PC)
  • Vietcong Fist Alpha (PC)
  • Vietcong 2 (PC)
  • Vietcong 2 Demo (PC)
  • MLB Fantasy All-Stars (DS)
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution (DS)
  • Major League Baseball 2K9 Fantasy All-Stars (DS)
  • NHL 2K10 (Wii)
  • NBA 2K10 (Wii)
