Review: God Eater 2 Rage Burst

Posted by: 9/11/2016

In the 10 years that I’ve been reviewing video games, never has my opinion of a video game changed so drastically after learning a key piece of information about said game. My initial approach for this review was to tear it apart, talking about how it looks like a PlayStation 2 game with super short missions that felt more at home on a mobile platform.

It was around this time that I learned that God Eater 2 Rage Burst for PC is a port of a 2013 PlayStation Vita game.

God Eater 2 Rage Burst is also a little out of my comfort zone. I am not the biggest anime fan. I’ve maybe watched 20 minutes of anime at a friends house. I couldn’t tell you which show we watched. While God Eater 2 Rage Burst didn’t turn me into a big anime fan, I have more respect for it than I did before.

So what kind of game is God Eater 2? Well if you were wanting to play a Monster Hunter game on PC, you’re in luck. With my limited time playing Monster Hunter 4 on 3DS, I instantly got a MH4 vibe. Short missions going to take out monsters, and a hub area that pushes the narrative forward and allows you to change your loadout and upgrade weapons.

I gained a huge respect for this type of gameplay hook. It still isn’t my preferred way for a game to flow, but I didn’t think I’d be this appreciative of games in this style.

As I said before, this game is a 2013 PlayStation Vita port, so if you’re hoping for a graphical showcase, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. The awesome anime cutscenes lead into exactly what you would imagine from a Vita to PC port. Low resolution textures, small maps, and some generic looking environments. The character design is the best part of the visuals, which makes sense with it being a character anime game.

By now, I’m sure you’ve decided if this game is for you or not. I can’t just recommend it to someone who isn’t into this genre, or an anime fan, I’m not sure there is much for you with this game. But if you are an anime fan and into the genre, you’ll be very happy to have this kind of game available on PC.

Score: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯/10

God Eater 2 Rage Burst was developed and published by Bandai Namco for PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita on August 30,  2016. A retail copy of the PC version was provided to us by Bandai Namco for reviewing purposes.
