Valve announces SteamOS

Valve has said they will be making three big announcements this week that will be focused on bring the Steam platform to the living room.

The first announcement was made today, with Valve introducing SteamOS. This operating system will be based on Linux architecture, and will be similar to the Steam software that is used today.

SteamOS will introduce game streaming, so that your current PC can connect to the computer with SteamOS installed on it, and stream games to the SteamOS computer connected to a TV. This allows players to play any game that is in their library that may not be compatible with Linux, which would make it unplayable on SteamOS. Valve is saying that more than 200 games are compatible with Linux now, and more AAA games compatible with SteamOS will be announced soon.

SteamOS also promises to bring video and music services to the platform, allow family sharing so different family members can unlock their own achievements in games, and family options to limit what certain games some family members can play.

The next announcement will be made on September 25th, and the third will be on September 27th. We’ll have more information about Steam in the living room soon.
