Ouya launches “Free The Games” fund

The initial impressions of the Android-based Ouya video game console has not been stellar. With the lack of a killer app to sell consoles, Ouya is trying to figure out a way to get games on their console.

To try and get some great exclusive games on Ouya, the company has launched a fund called “Free The Games.” For independent developers looking to receive funding for their game on Kickstarter, Ouya will double the amount of money a developer receives. For example, if a developer sets their goal for $40,000, and they reach it, Ouya will throw in an extra $40,000.

There are a few rules to the fund. The biggest is that if an independent developer uses the fund, their game must be exclusive to the Ouya for six months. After that six months, the developer can release their game on any platform. Ouya will only match funding up to $250,000, and will be using this fund until Ouya has spent $1,000,000.

The Kickstart also must start on or after August 9, 2013, and must end any day on or before August 10, 2014.

The Ouya console started out as a Kickstarter program on July 10, 2012. The initial goal for the console was $950,000, and ended up raising a total of $8,596,474, with over 63,000 people funding the project. The Ouya was released to the public this past spring.
