Nintendo’s VERY Limited Edition Switch

Posted by: 6/26/2018

If you’re any kind of Nintendo Switch fan, you might already know that they’ve announced a limited edition of the console: and it looks like cardboard. Yes, that’s right. If the red and blue controllers for the portable console were too bright for your taste, then you may be interested in this color — beige is the new black. You’ll recognize this color as matching the Labo cardboard expansion sets that have also been hard to get.

So, now that you’re all invested in getting your little gaming paws on one of these — here’s the bad news. It’s not for sale.

WHAT? I know. It’s only winnable. AND you have to use the Labo sets (you already bought them, right?) to win. There are two ways to win the Nintendo Labo Creators Contest.

The first one requires creators to use the Labo kit (and additional craft materials that your crafty self provides) to make the “Best Toy-Con Musical Instrument.” The whole process has to be documented on video and it will be judged (alongside thousands of other entries) on “Quality, Creativity, Spirit, and Sound,” according to Nintendo.

The second way to enter the contest is by creating the “Best Gaming Experience Using Toy-Con Garage.” Same judging rules as before except without “Sound.” This means you’ll have to create a game in the Toy-Con garage; however, if you’ve created something (for either category) for a previous Labo contest, you can enter it again as long as it fits the theme.

This all sounds a bit exhausting. You know some smart ninth grader is gonna steal your thunder! So here’s more bad news to brighten your day: there’s only ONE grand prize winner per contest of the custom faux-cardboard Switch! They have it listed at a retail cost of $1000, which I would gawk at, except I’ve seen how much hard-to-find consoles go for around the holidays, and so in this case I almost believe that to be underpriced. What a steal!

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL! Grand prize winners also get a Labo Creators jacket (sure), and a $70 “award certificate,” which, to my great delight, is not a gift certificate. It’s a framed award. Signed by Labo devs. That sounds nice — something you can hang on your wall, prove to your parents you’re a winner and video games are NOT a waste of time, no matter what they say. I digress.

The four runners up of each contest get that sweet Labo jacket, a $70 award certificate, and a “collectible pair of Joy-Con controllers,” which I would assume would be the Labo beige (Labeige?), but it’s not specifically stated. These contests are limited to citizens of the US and Canada, and must be over thirteen years old. Contest runs July 19 – August 20, so if you’re interested and didn’t already throw all that expensive cardboard out, hurry and get to creating!

This is the second installment of the Labo Creators Lab contests — sorry I missed the first one! But now that you know, are you going to enter?
