The Division 2 skips Steam for Epic Games Store

Competition continues to heat up between different PC games stores. Ubisoft announced yesterday that their upcoming loot shooter The Division 2 will release on uPlay and the Epic Games Store, and it will be skipping Steam.

Since it’s release, PC gamers have been pretty divided on the presence of the Epic Games Store. While some welcome competition to the PC gaming market, others are upset with its presence. Between poor regional pricing, a game launcher with few features, and exclusive games, PC gamers fear that the Epic Games Store is creating another walled garden in the PC market.

As for The Division 2, the game is not exclusive to the Epic Games Store. You can still buy keys for the game from key resellers, like the Humble Store and Green Man Gaming, and these keys will redeem on uPlay. Because of the ability to buy the game from key resellers, I’m less upset at the exclusivity of The Division 2 as I was with games like Ashen.

We will see if the game skipping Steam will result in lower sales on PC. It’s a gamble that Ubisoft is willing to take. Personally, I’m not ready to leave the snowy streets of New York City just yet, so I’ll be getting my hands on The Division 2 later in the year.
