According to a tweet by industry insider and host of GTTV Geoff Keighley, Call of Duty Black Ops outsold Modern Warfare 2. Day one sales that is, while MW2 sold 310 MM USD on day one last year, Black Ops managed to increase that by 16 percent by selling 360 MM.
This might put to rest the Infinity Ward vs TreyArch conersations for a while.
[Update 1] – Activision has now send out an official press release regarding sales numbers and confirmed that 5.6 Million copies of the game have been sold in North America and the UK on day one alone. Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.7 Million copies in the same time last year.
While Black Ops appears to be a very good game with a current Metacritic score of 90 it sure feels a bit like Modern Warfare 2’s success really drove the brand ahead.
The question is, if Modern Warfare 2 was not the run-away success last year, would Black Ops have been on the map as much as it is today.
