Review: Payday: The Heist

Posted by: 11/7/2011

This console generation has been littered with first person shooters, many of them mediocre in quality and lacking in features to make it worth a 60 Dollar price tag. Payday: The Heist is a game that may have been put in that category but it did the first thing it needed to do correctly – the price-point. At 20 Dollars, this downloadable gem is worth everyone’s money, just don’t steal it!

Payday: The Heist is Sony Online Entertainment’s answer to the everyday shooter rut we have been in for a few years now. if you are looking for fast paced and explosive coop gameplay that switches up the monotony, then Payday is worth your digital money. The Heist will receive my highest praises for the idea behind the game but also some complaints that can be easily fixed in future patches. Payday is a 4 player coop scenario experience with 6 different maps which range from bank heists to inmate escapes.

While AI teammates aren’t capable enough to pull off the different objectives in each heist smoothly, the game shines when 4 real players run the heist. The epic moments we watch in heist movies and TV shows will occur on a regular basis in this game. Each heist will require objectives to be completed by the group to either rob a bank or pull off another job. Payday is some of the most fun I have had in a game this year.

While The Heist is a totally engaging and fun game to play I do have a few gripes with it. Even though the gunplay is satisfying and serviceable it does feel a bit stiff and the lacking team as well as enemy AI can take you out of the experience a bit. This becomes most appearant when completing specfic objectives.

Objectives are individual things that need to be completed during the heists, such as cutting through a gate or breaking a ceiling. During these actions there is no timer or heads up display pop up that indicates some direction int he game and can be frustrating when first going through the different maps.

All these issues however, aren’t enough to get busted during this heist. Payday remains on of the most intense and fun cooperative gameplay in recent memory. When Payday: The Heist works, it will create memories that you will be talking about for a while.

Score: 8 / 10
