Bethesda revealed what was behind the mysterious Vine videos when they announced The Evil Within last Friday. We learned that the game is being developed by Shinji Mikami and his new Tokyo based development studio Tango Gameworks.  Today IGN has revealed more details behind the new survival horror game that is expected to ship in 2014.

The player takes control of Sebastian, a detective that is sent to investigate a homicide  in an asylum situated in the middle of the city. Upon arriving to the asylum, Sebastian and the two detectives that accompany him, notice empty police cars as the Gothic-themed asylum is seen in the background.

Upon entering the asylum, the player is greeted by scenes of extreme violence. The game uses a modified version of the id Tech 5 engine, meaning every bit of blood and dismembered body parts have extreme amounts of detail. The last time Mikami worked on a horror game was Resident Evil 4 for the GameCube. Now that he is working with true cinematic widescreen, players will be able to see more of the creepy environment at one time.

That is something Mikami told IGN they will be working hard on in The Evil Within. He wants to be able to find that perfect balance between cinematic and survival-horror gameplay. Mikami also said that he feels like horror games are starting to drift away from makes them scary, and he wants to bring horror elements back. You’ve piqued are interest, Mr. Mikami.
