Need for Speed Rivals revealed

EA has announced that Need for Speed Rivals will be the next game in the stories racing franchise. It is being developed by Ghost Games with help from Criterion.

The game is set around cops and racers again, but gamers can be on either side of the law. Racers will try to become infamous by capturing the most intense police chase escapes on video and sharing them with the world. Racers will earn Speed Points by evading police and your reputation will rise. But if you are busted by the police, you lose it all. Cops will work together to take down racers and gain experience points to unlock better police cars and police tech.

Tying this all together is a mode called AllDrive that blurs the line between single and multiplayer racing. Marcus Nilsson, head of Ghost Games and former DICE employee, said ““You can be in Australia, you boot it up, you’re playing the game alone, you’re going through the single-player progression, playing through the premise, and then I join the game. We’re friends, you and me, so I’ll automatically be put into your world. I can still be playing my single-player progression, through my premise, but at any time – obviously, we’re in same world – our worlds can meet.” He continued by saying different players can be cops or racers, and if they are on the same road, the cop could try to pursue the racer.

As Rivals is releasing later this year for both current and next-gen consoles, AllDrive will be used in both versions of the game.

On top of the new multiplayer system, Rivals is being built on the Frostbite 3 engine, meaning that it will look better than ever. Nilsson has said that the next-generation of consoles give the game a great look, and they are able to do things that they have never been able to do in the past. It will also be released for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 sometime after the current-gen release.
