Valve announces Steam Machines for 2014

Posted by: 9/25/2013

Well, we all sort of wanted it, we all sort of knew it and we are pretty happy about it. Right?

Today Valve has announced that Steam Machines will be coming sometime in 2014 with a hardware beta process being initiated now, you can check it out here and sign up. This is the second of a three pronged announcement Valve is making this week and comes hot off the tails of the Steam OS reveal.

What we used to call the ‘Steam Box’ during the speculation period now has an official name. Living room designated PC experiences will be delivered via Steam OS, Big Picture and the Steam Machines for which Valve will partner with various manufacturers on. More on this in the future Valve says.

The hardware beta prototype is due to be shipped this year to 300 lucky eligible testers which will need to go through a few steps in order to qualify.

Of course gamers can run Steam OS on their own machines and hook it up to the TV in the living room but this should be a nice option for people who don’t want to be hassled. No word on price or specs as these things are being nailed down as we speak and the beta should be very helpful here.
