Call of Duty is now a 3 year, 3 studio franchise

During today’s earnings release, Activision not only announced better than expected earnings for the quarter, but also made a major announcement regarding the Call of Duty franchise which had been on a two year development cycle for a long time with Infinity Ward and TreyArch getting two years to develop their games.

Two years ago we got Black Ops 2 from TreyArch and last year we received Ghosts from Infinity Ward. Sledgehammer Studios had been a supporting studio and helped on development for Modern Warfare 3 which launched in 2011 to good marks.

Finally Sledgehammer will play the lead role in development for their very own Call of Duty game that is to  release in 2014 – no details yet. This means TreyArch gets an extra year of time to develop and Infinity Ward will have a full three years as well for the next game from them.

In essence this means more time for the studios to be creative, build a full and innovative game and polish it for best results which is good news all around for gamers, the studios and probably Activision’s profits.
