Price Tag: Oculus Rift to cost $599 and is shipping in March

Posted by: 1/6/2016

Well, we have been waiting for the final word on the how much and when question for quite some time when it comes to the Facebook owned company Oculus and its first VR headset the Rift. The price tag may shock you and reminds us of the FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE DOLLAR PS3 reveal at E3 many moons ago – nonetheless – here it is.

The Oculus Rift is going to be priced at $599 and will begin shipping in March and can be pre-ordered now if you have the cash – don’t forget the $1000 PC you will need to run it properly according to Oculus. If you own a PC already you can check out if it will be capable of running the VR set – check it out on their pre-order page here. The headset will ship with an Xbox One controller, carrying case and a remote as well all in a nice carrying case.

Don’t get us wrong – we LOVE tech – we think VR is cool – but that means you need around $1600 to play VR games that aren’t even really well established yet. Buying the Rift will be an early adopter promise that may be hard to keep – especially in the first year or two when experiences will be slim. We are excited but cautiously optimistic at best. We will see what happens when the HTC VIVE and Sony PlayStation VR hit the market later this year.
