Assassin’s Creed is Taking Another “Year Off” in 2019

Ubisoft has revealed to Gamespot that there will be not be a new Assassin’s Creed title in 2019. Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, said that Assassin’s Creed Origins and this year’s Odyssey were in development simultaneously, enabling them to release in sequential years. Guillemot then confirmed that Assassin’s Creed will be taking 2019 off, saying “But next year you’re not going to have a fully-fledged one [Assassin’s Creed].” Instead of a new title, 2019 will be focused around adding more content to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. This move falls in line with Ubisoft’s new focus on “games as services”.

It remains to be seen if the “games as services” approach will pay off, but Assassin’s Creed taking a year off has paid dividends in the past. After Assassin’s Creed Unity left a bad taste in player’s mouths, the much-improved Assassin’s Creed Syndicate suffered decreased sales. No Assassin’s Creed game was released in 2016, and 2017’s Origins was a well-received return to form.
