Shovel Knight Showdown Revealed

Posted by: 8/29/2018

The final game in the Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove collection has been revealed, and it’s…a fighting game?! Sort of, anyway. Yacht Club Games, together with IGN, revealed Shovel Knight Showdown to the world yesterday. Showdown allows up to 4 players to face off in combat, with a healthy amount of platforming mixed in.

The final game will feature more than 16 characters.

Shovel Knight Showdown’s roster will exceed 16 different characters, including the titular Shovel Knight, Shield Knight, Black Knight, The Enchantress, and all 8 boss characters in the Order of No Quarter. Those 12 and the Gold Armor seen in yesterday’s reveal make for a total of 13 confirmed characters. Crossover characters were not discussed, but given Shovel Knight’s habit of turning up in other indie games I don’t think they can be ruled out. Each character will get their own path through Showdown’s Story Mode, which promises duels, mini-games, and more across a myriad of stages.

Showdown promises multiple game modes for up to 4 players to test their mettle in. Gem Clash and Showdown modes were confirmed yesterday, as was a “full-fledged” practice mode. Free-for-all and team battle modes will be available for every multiplayer mode. Unfortunately, Shovel Knight Showdown will only support local multiplayer. AI characters will be available in order to fill in any gaps.

Stages will be based on Shovel Knight stages and characters.

Shovel Knight Showdown will be coming to every platform Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is available on…except Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. Yacht Club Games did not give an estimated release date. Players that have already purchased Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove will receive Shovel Knight Showdown as a free update. A stand-alone download will also be available for $9.99 for those just looking for a fight.

Yacht Club Games concluded their announcement by promising Shovel Knight: King of Cards news later this week.
