New Firmware Update may get you a New Xbox 360 Slim

Every year we are prompted to update our Xbox 360s which adds some major new functionality. Previously we had the NXE (New Xbox Experience) which got rid of the blades while last year’s added Kinect support. This Spring Microsoft is adding some new anti-piracy features, added usable disc space and PayPal support.

One feature the console make probably did not want to add was an ‘unreadable disc’ error. Some of the Xbox 360 consoles currently in the wild, were reported to no longer be able to read retail discs.

Apparently the new firmware update, currently in Beta, will semi-brick certain Xbox 360 models. It is not known which exact 360 versions are affected but if it does happen to your console, Microsoft will replace your brick with an Xbox 360 S 250GB, free of charge.

While this redoubtably will have people trying to brick their consoles, Microsoft is able to detect this issue over Xbox LIVE and already reaching out to potential console owners.
