When it comes to competitive online gaming or simply wanting to enjoy a single player game at home after a long day of work, late at night without waking anybody up – a good gaming headset is one of the most essential accessories a gamer can have. The problem itself is simple, give me a headset that is comfortable, with built-in voice chat and great sound quality for a reasonable price.

The solution however is hard and often combined with painstaking research and being unhappy with the headset anyway.

Thrustmaster Y-250X 1

Thrustmaster is typically best known for making racing wheels and controllers for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. With the Thrustmaster Y-250 series which is made for all three platforms, the hardware maker is smartly filling the void of medium range gaming headphones that still provide quality that is equal to much higher priced TurtleBeach for instance.

We had a chance to put the Thrustmaster Y-250X Headset – for the Xbox 360 through – its paces. At a 90 Dollar asking price the Y-250X is one of the most generously priced, feature filled gaming headsets we have seen. The headphones are wired to avoid any static or cut outs during gameplay or movie watching which is a big plus – wired head sets are the way to go if you are an audiophile. The Y-250X also allows for adjusting in-game audio as well as chat independently which not every headset pulls off that well and painlessly.

The other audio features allow for base adjustments, mic and chat on/off switches as well as adjustable mic gain – all of which are on a handy dial rather than the headset itself which I preferred over some of the competitors where many controls are inconveniently placed at the cups themselves.

When it comes to comfort and usability the Thrustmaster Y-250X does mostly well. It comes equipped with an extended, adjustable mic as well as adjustable medal head band and over ear amplifier cups that cancel most of the unwanted noise for both the user and others in the room. The headset is a little bit heavier than I would like and even with the soft leather cushion can cause some pressure on the top of the head.

Overall though the Thrustmaster Y-250X is an absolutely fantastic headset for the price of 90 Dollars which in my mind is hard to beat. The Y-250X allows for the chat / in-game audio adjustments on the fly as well as an overall very nice comfort level and audio quality. I spent many, many hours playing games like Dead Island Riptide, DiRT 3, XCOM Enemy Unknown along with others using the Y-250X and the headset always provided optimal conditions for me apart from some discomfort after extended play sessions but this will be the case with almost all headsets of similar quality. If you are looking for an affordable solution that doesn’t compromise features then the  Thrustmaster Y-250X is for you.

Score: 9 / 10
