The Top 10 Things we won’t miss from the last Generation

Posted by: 10/23/2013

On November 15th the next generation officially kicks off with the release of the PlayStation 4, and only seven short days later the Xbox One will release on November 22nd and by then the last generation of consoles will seem like a distant memory.

With that in mind we thought it was time to recap some of the worst things about the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 generation after we played those consoles for the last 8 years. Yes we are including the WiiU also – deal with it!

With that, it is time for the Top 10 things from Last Gen that will will not miss!

#10 – Slow boot ups of the Xbox

Let’s be serious, with all of the new dashboard additions and loads of downloaded games and DLC, our Xbox 360 hard drives took so long to boot up the home screen that we were able to make up a cup of tea or whip up a sandwich!

#9 – Slow trophy syncing on PSN

I cannot tell you how many times I actually wanted to check a friends trophies list or my own – let alone compare the two – before I realized it would need to sync them with the PlayStation Network. The result? I am not sure what my trophy count is!

#8 – The WiiU interface

As slow as the Xbox 360 boot up process was, it was better than dealing with the initial WiiU interface. Still, loading and moving between menus takes way too long and I won’t take it anymore!

#7 – AI limitations

With only a limited amount or RAM and rapidly aging processors, Artificial Intelligence of team mates or enemies alike cannot keep up with the times. Stupid friendlies and even dumber foes are one of the most annoying things in gaming today – albeit being hilarious sometimes.

#6 – Visual limitations AKA ‘Da Grafixxxxxx’

The same I noted about the AI is true for the visuals, games have reached its pinnacle in terms of visuals, while titles like the Last of Us, Forza 4 or Grand Theft Auto V look amazing on the old hardware, it is a far cry from modern PC and what new consoles will bring to the table.

#5 – Small hard drives

We live in a world where downloadable games are in process of becoming the new gold standard. PSN has been offering day and date digital releases with the retail counterparts and even pre-loading, while the 360 boosted its Games on Demand. With games being downloaded more and more, our relatively small hard drives just don’t cut it anymore!

#4 – Xbox Live avatars

Come on – you know they were silly from the start! Xbox 360’s avatars – the answer to the popular Nintendo Miis are just not really as cool as they may have seemed initially. As much as I love my DiRT 3 racing suit – I am over it!

#3 – The slow PlayStation store

Before the PlayStation Store revamp it was ugly. After the revamp it is slow – frustratingly slow! For a console that is promoting digital downloads left, right and center, we will fall asleep before getting to the game we wanted to buy.

#2 – Xbox Live’s convoluted marketplace

Do I need to say more? At one point the Xbox 360 dashboard was a quick and easy way to find the good content, now it is merely a shadow of itself. Finding a game or something cool to download seems impossible on the convoluted Xbox Live marketplace.

#1 – Sequels!

Man, I love games like Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, Saints Row IV, Battlefield 4, Gears of War 3 or the many other quality games we play that end in a number in the title but I am also so very tired of sequels. A new console generation marks the beginning of new IP and a fresh start. I cannot wait to dive into the new games we will see and even though Ryse and Knack may not have me jumping of the roof, they are new – an attempt at creating a new thing.

What about you, what are the things you won’t miss from your beloved PS3, 360 and WiiU days?
