Waiting for Sunset Overdrive

Among the many wonders on show at June’s E3 gathering in LA was Sunset Overdrive, an awesome-looking apocalyptic open-world shooter with an original premise. It’s a game that many believe is going to lift developers Insomniac Games out of the doldrums they’ve experienced since the excitement over Ratchet & Clank (2009) died down.

Influences

There are influences from all over the place on display in the game’s design, from zombie culture, in the form of the energy-drink crazed “OD’d” characters that players must battle; to punky comic strips and TV including Tank Girl and even The Young Ones. Though it’s set in a sort of “end-times” society, with the annihilation of civilization just around the corner, the design is all bright colors, fun and excitement, rather than gloomy darkness and misery. It has the appearance of a game that’s going to be a huge hit, and our only problem right now is how to get through the next couple of months while we wait for it. One option would be the similarly colorful level-based casino games at www.casinosagafans.com, where players find themselves on the island of Sagaville, known for its party lifestyle. It strays away from the typical online casinos that try and give players the Vegas feeling but instead tries to make it more fun as you progress through the levels to get round the island and different missions.

Setting

Sunset City was a normal, run of the mill future metropolis until FizzCo released their latest energy drink; this had the unfortunate effect of turning anyone who drank it into a murderous mutant. Your character (who is completely customizable) had a job and a life until the soda-based apocalypse, but must now roam the streets avoiding the OD’d. One of the great things about the game is the fact that the mutants will catch you if you just amble down the road; you need to be doing free-running, skater-style tricks to stay one step ahead. And there’s a huge world in which to do them.

Weapons

There’s a bizarre selection of weapons available, including a baseball bat with a massive lump of steel attached, and a gun that fires vinyl records. Harpoons and acid are also at your disposal, and as you traverse the city you’ll begin to get the basic idea of the game; the apocalypse, for people like you, is the best thing that could ever have happened. Your unfulfilling job, like your horrible boss, is gone forever, and the city (while it may not last much longer) is now your playground – for as long as you can stay alive. The message; embrace the madness! Sunset Overdrive is exclusive to Xbox One.
