Official Xbox LIVE Region switching coming in January

Posted by: 1/3/2013

Most gamers in the US or anywhere really won’t care about this news because it simply does not affect them nor will it ever, given that they do not move from one region of the world to another and have an Xbox LIVE account.

In the past it has been impossible to switch the region on your Windows LIVE account which is the underlying account Microsoft uses to tie to an Xbox LIVE gamertag. Until now. This locked in region means you will purchase content from that specific region which would almost be fine if there wasn’t the issue of purchasing content or Microsoft Points.

Take me for example, I have a German or ‘European’ account and have to pay in EURO – well this means I pay more money since it has to be converted in US Dollar – you see my dilemma – I get ripped off. Another issue is that certain content is locked by region such as apps or specific games or DLC.

This was a battle us as customers have fought until this month and always received the short end of the stick – there were some workarounds but it was less than pleasant or justified to have to deal with as a paying customer.

Today a news broked that a streamlined tool will become available this month, it is currently in Beta, that will allow users to switch their region every 3 months and carry over LIVE Gold memberships, MSP, etc. Finally a solution for what is a simple problem to fix – at least in theory.
